I've finished Tess Gerritsen's The Sinner. Engaging, but predictable. A good beach book, perhaps, or for passing the time while traveling.

I've recently finished Erin Hart's debut novel, Haunted Ground and its sequel, Lake of Sorrows. Both are murder mysteries set among the Irish peat bogs and involving bog bodies. Features Dr. Nora Gavin (American Irish forensic pathologist and singer) and her erstwhile love interest, Cormac Maguire (Irish archeologist and flautist). These books were pretty good, and I'm looking forward to Hart's next novel, whenever that may be.

Um, Aravis, excuse my ignorance, but would "bog bodies" be bodies that turn up in a bog?

No worries words, I didn't know until I read the books myself. Yes, bog bodies= bodies found preserved in peat bogs.

The 'Ice-man' saga of Otzi is sort of a ice 'bog body' tale - if you know what I mean. Anyone followed the twists in that story over the last couple of decades?

Aravis - I have ordered Erin Hart's two books from an Australia online bookstore and have just been told that Lake of Sorrows has not yet been published. Hmmmm - they have a cover picture and I know that you have read it. I nearly emailed a snide comment but guess that the guy meant 'not yet available in Australia'. It will be available here next month and meanwhile I will have to content myself with an orgy of Kerry Greenwood. Life wasn't meant to be easy.

Robert, I'm not familiar with that. Tell me more?
Pink, I found it in the new book section of my library so you're probably right, it simply hasn't been published there yet. Does the cover show a ghostly bog with a woman's face off to one side? Or do you get another design? I like seeing how cover art differs from country to country.

Aravis - the cover pictures are not clear enough to see exactly what is on them but one is a sort of blue green and the other is brown. When I receive my copies of them I'll let you know. If you go to: www.dymocks.com.au and put 'erin hart' in the search field you will be able to have a look - the link to the actual page doesn't transport; I tried.

I have a very interesting little book called "The Bog People - Iron-Age Man Preserved" by P V Glob (ISBN 0-571-11079-7) and it mainly concentrates on the finds in the Danish bogs, with fascinating photographs of the bodies and the artifacts which were found with them. It also describes the probable rituals and reasons for the executions.
Don't look if you are queasy but for anyone with an interest in bodies in bogs it is a great book.

Pink- as I suspected, the art is different. Ours is more eerie while yours is more ethereal and beautiful.
Robert- thanks for the links. I'll check them out. :0)

I have just finished reading one of the worst books I've ever forced myself to finish. If anybody offers you "The Last Pope" [by David Osborn] on a silver salver - refuse politely!!!
It is about the behind the scenes before and during a conclave to elect a new pope and the self serving fat cats in the Vatican, the scandal generating and the back-biting; and what the Vatican might do about a man who seems to be living a truly christ-like life in the 20th century.
I checked at BookCrossing.com and find that I'm the only member who has had the nerve to register a copy. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it.

Aravis - the cover of Haunted Ground. www.bookcrossing.com/fullsizecover/2918708I hope that the link will take you to the blown-up version. I enjoyed the book but felt that Erin Hart started a few too many hares - it was as though she threw in clues but then either forgot about them or was not able to work them into the plot - or editing removed the reason for them to be there. However, for a first book it was interesting and enjoyable and I am looking forward to reading her next book, which I have on order - it is not available here yet.

I agree, it was a bit scattered. However I enjoyed it, more perhaps because I had read the second first and this one filled in the blanks for me.
